More nations join anti-nuclear terror plan

WASHINGTON, May 9 (UPI) — The global effort to combat nuclear terrorism is gaining steam, the U.S. State Department says. Cape Verde, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Georgia, Montenegro, the Netherlands and Spain Tuesday joined the U.S.-Russian joint initiative to fight nuclear terrorism, the State Department reported. Since the plan was launched last July, a total of 32 countries as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency have joined the group, which will meet in Kazakhstan next month to review progress of activities and address gaps in implementation, the department said in a statement. The initiative aims not only to reduce the threat of nuclear terror, but also to combat use of weapons of mass destruction worldwide. To further that objective, the plan strives to improve accounting and control of nuclear material and facilities, as well as detecting and suppressing illicit trafficking of such materials, among other efforts.
