Downer confirms Hicks home ‘soon’

(ABC) The Federal Government says it now has a clear timetable for the transfer of David Hicks from Guantanamo Bay to Adelaide’s Yatala Prison.

Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer says Hicks will board a chartered plane at Guantanamo Bay along with federal police officers, South Australian prison officers, and his Australian lawyer David McLeod.

But Mr Downer says he cannot reveal the exact time or location of the flight’s arrival in Australia for security reasons.

“We don’t want to turn it into a great media scrum if that can be avoided,” he said.

“He will be coming back to Adelaide soon, and that will be fairly soon. Not today though, and it obviously has to be by the 29th, but it’s going to be somewhat before the 29th.”

Mr Downer has hinted the flight will stop-over in a foreign country, but not the United States.

“Some countries won’t allow people who’ve supported Al Qaeda through their territory, not least the United States of America,” he said. “So you can’t bring him back by the shortest route.”

Hicks is serving a nine-month sentence after admitting a charge of providing material support for terrorism.
