Milan Police Bust Islamic Terrorist Cell

(ANSA) – Milan, June 7 – Police on Thursday broke up an Al Qaeda Islamic Maghreb terrorist cell which is believed to have offered financial and logistic support to terrorists operating in Tunisia and Algeria. A total of nine arrest warrants were issued, including one for Sami Essid Ben Khemais, a Tunisian who has been in prison since April 2001. Ben Khemais was arrested six years ago in the first major operation against Muslim extremists who support terrorist groups. His six-year two-month sentenced ended last Sunday`but the new warrant was served on him befor`he could be`released. Police were able to break up the terrorist cell thanks to`testimony from Tlili Lazar, a Tunisian who was extradited`from France last November and who is collaborating with Italian authorities. The cell is believed to have been involved in terrorist attacks in Tunisia last January and Algeria in April.
