Israel gives PNP bomb-detecting machine

(AP) MANILA, Philippines — Saying that threats of terror remain, the Israeli embassy donated a bomb-detecting machine to the Philippine National Police, officials said Thursday.

“I know the terror is around the world and not only in one country. We are all concerned with extremist Muslim organizations. It’s important to keep fighting this war,” said Zvi A. Vapni, Israeli ambassador to the Philippines.

He also noted that the PNP was in constant coordination with its Israeli counterpart in the fight against terror.

The vault-like machine, a Torrex 150 X-ray inspection system made in the United States, has the capacity to detect the presence of bomb ingredients inside parcels, mail and other suspicious packages, said Vapni.

“This X-ray machine will help police identify check parcels and mails to make security much better,” Vapni told reporters in Camp Crame.

Deputy Director General Avelino Razon, police deputy chief for administration, said the machine would be a great help in the PNP’s efforts to combat terror.

Razon said the machine will be turned over to the Explosive and Ordnance Division (EOD) of the Logistics Support Service.
