Montreal newspaper tries to avoid revealing sources in alleged terrorist case

(The Canadian Press) MONTREAL – Lawyers for a Montreal newspaper are trying to prevent a Federal Court judge from forcing two of its journalists to reveal a source in the case of a suspected terrorist.

Adil Charkaoui is in court trying to get a ruling to make Montreal La Presse identify who leaked a top secret CSIS document that accuses him of being an al-Qaida member.

The move is part of the Moroccan-born Charkaoui’s attempt to seek a stay in proceedings against him, claiming the leak infringes on his right to a fair trial.

La Presse lawyer Christian Leblanc said during closing arguments today in Montreal that protecting sources is necessary to safeguard the media’s right to freedom of expression.

But Judge Simon Noel pointed out that releasing the classified documents in the first place was illegal.

Lawyers for Charkaoui will present their arguments later today.
